Rockboy Tutorial

September 18, 2008 at 8:19 PM 1 comment

I’ve had my 30 GB iPod video for about three quarters year now, courtesy of my aunt way yonder there in New Jersey. For some reason, I feel naturally inclined to hack any piece of electronic I come into possession with using the infinite power of the Internet.

Recently, I’ve installed Rockbox on my iPod, and some fellow students have become interested in being able to play Gameboy and Gameboy Color games on their iPod as well. So for you and their benefit, I have been inspired to create a tutorial for turning your iPod into a Gameboy emulator. Enjoy!

Moufflets is not in any way responsible for any damage to your persons or property. The methods described could potentially damage your iPod. Use this tutorial at your own risk.

Note: Tutorial intended for Fifth Generation (5G & 5.5G) 30GB Apple iPods using Windows.

The first order of business is to enable your iPod for disk use, if you have not done so already.

Connect your iPod to your computer and start up iTunes.

Find and select the iPod tab under Devices on the left sidebar.

Set your iPod to this use by selecting the checkbox labeled “Enable iPod for disk use.” and select Apply.

Enable your iPod for Disk Use

Installing Rockbox

Next, you must download the Rockbox files to place on your iPod. Go to the Latest Build page on the Rockbox site and select the iPod that you possess. Alternatively, you can read the Rockbox manual.

You can either Open or Save the .zip file.

Then, extract the files to a folder named “.rockbox” to your iPod root. Ensure that you have typed in the ‘dot’ in front of “.rockbox”.

Then download the iPod Patcher executive file to install the Bootloader. After you have downloaded, run the .exe file.

Run the iPod Patcher.

Run the iPod

You should now have successfully installed Rockbox on your iPod.

Unfortunately, Rockbox does not come with a bunch of Gameboy games pre-installed. Find a site that provides Gameboy ROMs and get them from there. Be advised that it may constitute an illegal act and may be punishable by law. Moufflets is once again not responsible for any actions that may occur.

Note: Rockbox only supports Gameboy and Gameboy Color games.

Once you have donwloaded a ROM, move the file (.gb or .gbc) to somewhere in your iPod directory.

Unplug your iPod safely using the Safely Remove Hardware icon in your System Tray

Use the Safely Remove Hardware icon to disconnect your iPod safely.

Wait until Rockbox loads. Then select Files and find your ROM file. Then select it. If asked, open it with Rockboy.
